Palm Springs uses old-school appeal and modern attractions to coax visitors to this Southern California desert resort city about 100 miles from Los Angeles. Celebrity bus tours and a downtown Palm Springs Walk of Stars pay homage to long-gone Hollywood celebrities who once made this city their glamorous retreat. The city also embraces the modern with its trendy restaurants, boutique hotels, spas and glittering resorts with high-tech amenities. Classic car shows are held in the Palm Springs area throughout the year, with an antique car exhibit even becoming a staple of Modernism Week.
The Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance is held each February at the Doral Desert Princess Resort and Spa in Palm Springs. Race car drivers and car designers often are in attendance at the two-day classic car show that includes antique automobiles from private collectors and car museums. Those who don’t attend the show featuring more than 200 class motor vehicles can still see a parade of vintage automobiles traveling city streets during the event’s one-day Tour Classique.
More than 500 classic and exotic cars are on display each November and February at McCormick’s Classic Car Show and Auction on the grounds of the Spa Resort Casino in downtown Palm Springs. It’s hosted by McCormick’s Palm Springs Collector Car Auctions. McCormick’s sponsors a much smaller classic car show each October at the annual Downtown Business Expo hosted by the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce.
Two local classic car shows include chili cook-offs. The local Knights of Columbus Council hosts the Ragin’ Bull Chili Cook-off and Classic Car Show held downtown each March. The Palm Springs Air Museum each October hosts its Chili Cook-Off and Car Show. The museum has a collection of vintage cars in addition to its better-known exhibits of World War II aircraft.
The Palm Springs Cruisin’ Association hosts the annual Dr. George Memorial Car Show, where hundreds of classic cars are on display each February at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden about 15 miles north of the city. The show is named for a co-founder of the local Desert Cancer Foundation. The car club hosts a smaller Cruise Night car show on the first Saturday of each month from June through October. It's held at Westfield Shopping Town, a shopping mall about 15 miles east of the city in Palm Desert, and includes games and contests for kids.
Each February, Palm Springs celebrates all that is modern about the city’s architecture, art and fashion during the city-sponsored 11-day festival called Modernism Week. Along with contemporary home tours, fashion shows, music concerts, films and exhibits scheduled throughout the city, a one-day vintage car show is held at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
